Menopause is not a disease, but an essential transition phase in the lives of every woman. There are several difficulties associated with menopause. Women experience physical changes and behavioral changes during this phase of their life.

The prime indication of menopause is lowered production of sex hormones - like estrogen and progesterone.

Ayurveda has solid views on menopause and it helps you gracefully manage this phase of woman life. Ayurveda acharyas lay solid pointing stones to make the transition stage health promotion and spiritual fulfillment.

According to the changes in physical and mental conditions, one can classify menopause into three types - vata type menopause, pitta type menopause and kapha type menopause

Vata Type Menopause is characterized by anxiety, mood swings, vaginal dryness, insomnia, constipation, nervousness, back and joint pains, etc.

This type of women can control the symptoms by following a diet that pacifies vata. Take only food items that are moderately warm. Use spices like cumin seed in preparations. Decrease intake of salads, coffee and cold drinks.

Vata type menopause women can also benefit from lifestyle modifications like going early to bed, massaging body with almond or olive oil, practicing yoga and meditation, etc.

Pitta type menopause is characterized by anger, irritability, hot flashes, acne and excessive bleeding.

Pitta type menopause women can benefit from cool food items like sweet fruits. Use spices like ginger, cardamom and fennel. Hot and spicy food items are better avoided.

Pitta type menopause women also should modify their lifestyle a bit by going early to bed (before 10), should massage body with coconut oil and practice meditation.

Kapha type menopause is characterized by weight gain, yeast infections, sluggishness and laziness.

Kapha type menopause women can benefit from food items that contain cinnamon, cayenne, mustard etc.

Kapha type menopause lifestyle adjustment includes getting up early in the daytime, pushing themselves into more activities and interaction with people. They can benefit from oil massage with linseed oil.

A balanced diet and lifestyle according to the symptoms are essential techniques of effectively managing the symptoms of menopause. If serious conditions like frequent severe hot flashes are observed, the woman can seek Ayurvedic deep cleansing and rejuvenating procedures like panchakarma and rasayana chikitsa.
